An advent money challenge swaps the chocolate for one small money action a day, from 1 to 24 December. Each step takes a few minutes. Together they keep Christmas spending visible, save a little, and get January ready before it arrives.
It works because it's small. You're not asked to stop spending in the busiest month of the year. You're asked to open one little door each day.
How to do it
- Print the list below or copy it into your notes.
- Do one action a day. Missed one? Do two tomorrow, or just skip it.
- Optional: put a small fixed amount (€1, €2 or €5) into a "January" pot each day you complete a step.

The 24 doors
Week 1: See clearly
- Write down your holiday number. (How to set it.)
- Check your balance without judging it. Just look.
- List every gift you still need to buy, with an amount.
- Unsubscribe from three shop newsletters.
- Look at what's already in your cupboards before the big food shop.
- Write down everything you spent this week.
Week 2: Small savings
- Cancel or pause one subscription you didn't use last month.
- Remove saved cards from one shopping app.
- Plan three dinners from what you have.
- Wrap gifts with what's at home: brown paper, string, greenery.
- Choose one event to skip or replace with something free.
- Say no to one thing kindly. Notice how it feels.
Week 3: Kindness and connection
- Write one card instead of buying one gift.
- Suggest a free plan with a friend: a walk, a film night.
- Re-check your gift list. Anything you can drop?
- Write down three things this year that went better than you expected.
- Pick one gift to make or bake.
- Total your spending so far against your holiday number.
Week 4: Get January ready
- List the bills due in January.
- Check when your January payday is and how long the gap feels.
- Set aside your January buffer, even if it's small.
- Decide one money intention for 2027.
- Choose your January reset: a no-spend challenge, a weekly money date, or both.
- Rest. You planned Christmas. That's enough.
Why tiny steps work in December
December is full of decisions, noise and emotion. Big rules break under that pressure. Small, daily, visible actions build a feeling of control without asking you to give up the joy of the season.
Ready for January too?

Frequently asked questions
What is an advent money challenge?
It's a daily money action from 1 to 24 December, like opening one door of an advent calendar. Some people also save a small fixed amount each day.
Can I start late?
Yes. Start on whichever day you find this and do the remaining doors.
How much will I save?
It depends on your choices. The aim is less about a big total and more about a December with fewer surprises.
