In October alone, 49 companies announced about 18,200 job cuts, and three of the biggest, Kroger, HubSpot and FICO, pointed to AI as the reason, according to the LayoffHedge tracker. Across 2026, reported layoffs passed 332,000 by 17 October, ahead of the same point last year. If you've been reading headlines and quietly wondering "what would I actually do?", this is the plan, hour by hour.
Who's cutting, and why it matters
| Company (Oct 2026) | Roles cut | Reason given |
|---|---|---|
| Kroger | 3,000 | AI-driven |
| Netflix | 1,000 | Restructuring |
| HubSpot | 660 | AI-driven |
| Hasbro | 587 | Restructuring |
| FICO | 570 | AI-driven |

The pattern is new: these aren't only struggling companies. Profitable firms are cutting roles they believe software can now do, which means the warning signs you used to watch for (bad quarters, hiring freezes) are less reliable. Preparation has to come before the email.
The 72-hour plan
HOURS 0–6: Protect, don't decide
- Don't sign anything today. Ask for the severance agreement in writing and how long you have to review it. Our 8 scripts to use before you sign severance give you the exact words for HR.
- Write down: last day of pay, PTO payout, bonus status, the date your health coverage ends, and who to contact in HR.
- Save personal copies of your pay stubs, performance reviews and benefits summary while you still have access.
HOURS 6–24: Turn on the income you're owed
- File for unemployment with your state as soon as you're eligible. Benefits are usually counted from when you file, so a week of waiting can be a week of money lost.
- Switch to a bare-bones budget: housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments. Everything else pauses for 30 days.
This is where most people freeze
Hour 6 is when the shock wears off and the to-do list feels impossible. Having the next steps already written down, in order, is what keeps you moving.
Layoff-Ready: The Income Shock Playbook is a 17-page digital PDF that turns this timeline into fill-in pages: your bare-bones budget, your severance questions, your 30-day cash map. Fill it in now, while you're employed and calm, and it's waiting if the email ever comes.
HOURS 24–48: Close the health insurance gap
- Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event: you can usually enroll in a Marketplace plan outside open enrollment. Compare that with your COBRA quote before choosing.
- ACA open enrollment for 2027 starts 1 November. Our open enrollment checklist shows what to compare.
HOURS 48–72: Negotiate and protect the long term
- Ask, in writing, for one improvement to the severance offer: an extra week per year of service, extended health coverage, or a neutral reference. The worst answer is no.
- Don't cash out your 401(k). Taxes and penalties can take a large bite. Leave it or roll it over.
- Tell your lenders before you miss a payment, not after. Many have hardship options.
If you're still employed: 3 things to do this month
- Know your number. How many months could you cover the bare-bones budget? See how much emergency fund you need in 2026.
- Keep your proof of value outside work systems: wins, numbers, kind emails from clients.
- Follow our 30-day money plan for an uncertain job market to build the buffer gradually.
And if the headlines are keeping you up at night, that's a normal response to uncertainty, not a weakness. Our complete guide to money anxiety has tools that help.
