Budget 2027 Ireland: What Three Real Households Actually Gain

Budget 2027 Ireland: three cottages on a giant ledger with a coin path

Budget 2027, announced on 6 October 2026, gives most workers between about €250 and €750 a year in income tax savings and raises core weekly welfare and pension payments by €10. That's roughly €5 to €14 a week for a worker, against inflation of 4.1%. Below, we follow three typical households to see what actually lands in their pocket, and where the gaps are.

€46,500
standard rate band, single (+€2,500)
+€125
personal, employee & earned income credits
+€10/wk
core welfare & State Pension
€14.94
minimum wage per hour from January 2027

The measures that matter for households

  • Income tax: the standard rate band rises by €2,500 to €46,500 for a single person; personal, employee (PAYE) and earned income tax credits each rise by €125. The Home Carer credit rises by €100, and the 2% USC band is widened.
  • Welfare and pensions: core weekly payments rise by €10. Fuel Allowance +€5 a week, Living Alone Allowance +€3, Child Support Payment +€6, Working Family Payment thresholds +€30, plus a €500 cost-of-disability payment.
  • Housing: the Rent Tax Credit continues at €1,150 (€2,300 for a jointly assessed couple); Help to Buy stays at up to €35,000; the Rent-a-Room limit is €16,000.
  • Childcare: maximum cost per child capped at €550 a month.
  • Minimum wage: up 79 cent to €14.94 an hour from January 2027. See how that compares with the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada in our minimum wage 2027 country showdown.

Three households, one year

HOUSEHOLD 1

Aíne, 29, renting in Cork, earns €35,000

Her income is below the band, so the wider band doesn't help her. She gains from the two €125 credit increases: about €250 a year, or €4.80 a week. She should make sure she's claiming the €1,150 Rent Tax Credit through Revenue's myAccount, which is worth far more than the Budget change itself.

HOUSEHOLD 2

Siobhán, 44, single PAYE worker in Dublin, earns €55,000

€2,500 more of her income is taxed at 20% instead of 40%, worth €500, plus €250 from the credits: about €750 a year, or €14.40 a week, before any small USC change.

HOUSEHOLD 3

Mary, 74, on the State Pension, living alone in Galway

€10 a week on her pension (€520 a year), €3 a week Living Alone Allowance (€156) and, if she qualifies, €5 a week more Fuel Allowance during the fuel season. Roughly €800 a year in total, the biggest gain of the three in cash terms. Before any of that, she'll get her Christmas Bonus in the week starting 7 December; our Christmas bonus comparison for Ireland, the UK, Australia and NZ shows how it stacks up.

Our estimates from the announced measures. Your result depends on your circumstances; Revenue's tax calculators and gov.ie will show exact figures once the Finance Bill passes. Renters can also check whether their next rent increase is legal in our myth check on rent in Ireland in 2026.

With inflation at 4.1%, a €5–€15 a week gain mostly protects you from falling behind. It won't fix a tight budget on its own.

What to do with it

  1. Check your credits on myAccount in January. The changes come through your payslip; make sure Revenue has the right credits on your record, including the Rent Tax Credit. If you're self-employed or have rental income, our Pay and File 2026 calendar for Ireland lists every deadline from 31 October to mid-January. To see exactly when each Budget change lands next to the Christmas Bonus, the LPT deadline and the fare rise, use our calendar of 15 winter money dates in Ireland.
  2. Decide in advance where the extra goes. €10 a week can quietly disappear. Point it at one thing: an emergency fund, a winter bills buffer or a debt. Our guide to how much emergency fund you need can help you choose. And if your payslip now shows a MyFutureFund deduction, our auto-enrolment myth check explains what you'd really give up by opting out. If you have a tracker or variable mortgage, our 4-week plan before the ECB's 17 December decision shows what another rate rise would cost you.
  3. Watch your energy contract. Wholesale gas prices are high this winter, so check what your supplier is charging and whether you're on the best plan for your usage. If you heat with oil, our heating oil prices explainer for Ireland works out what a 1,000-litre fill and the Fuel Allowance really mean this winter.
