Christmas Dinner Cost 2026: A Printable List Priced With BLS Data

Christmas dinner cost 2026: candlelit dinner table on a frozen lake with a giant shopping list

United States · Holiday food toolkit · Prices for September 2026

A Christmas dinner for 8 costs about $72 with a boneless ham, $69 with two roast chickens, or $107 with a sirloin roast, when you price the groceries at the latest US average prices from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is $8.65 to $13.38 a person for the main, the sides, the dessert and the coffee.

This page is the toolkit behind those numbers: a printable shopping list with official prices next to a blank column for yours, a scaling table for 4 to 12 guests, and the swaps that move the total most. Print it, take it to the store, and you will know within ten minutes whether your Christmas dinner budget is realistic.

Why we priced Christmas dinner with government data, not guesses

Search "Christmas dinner cost 2026" and you mostly get calculators pre-loaded with numbers nobody can trace, or articles still quoting last year's ads. We took a different route. Every price below is a US city average from the BLS average price series, collected monthly in 75 urban areas for the Consumer Price Index and published through the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED). The latest month is September 2026, released October 14; the October prices come out on November 10, 2026.

Two honest caveats. First, these are national averages, so a big-city store and a rural discount store will both differ from them, which is exactly why the list has a blank "your price" column. Second, BLS no longer publishes a national average price for whole frozen turkey (the series on FRED stops in 2020), so rather than invent a turkey number, we priced the three mains it does track: boneless ham, sirloin steak and whole chicken.

The good news in the wider data: grocery inflation is the mildest part of the US cost-of-living picture right now. In the September 2026 CPI, food at home was up 1.8% on the year, dairy was down 0.7% and pork down 0.7%, while gasoline was up 34.2%. Christmas food is not where your December budget breaks. The drive to Grandma's might be, which is why our check of 7 myths about falling gas prices is worth five minutes before you plan travel.

The protein decides the bill

Before the full list, look at what one pound of each main costs. This single choice moves the total more than every side dish combined.

Average price per pound, US city average, September 2026 (BLS via FRED)

Sirloin steak, boneless (USDA Choice) · $14.11

Ground beef, 100% beef · $6.79

Bacon, sliced · $6.76

Ham, boneless · $5.45

Chicken, fresh whole · $2.06

Per pound, sirloin is nearly seven times the price of whole chicken. Per plate the gap narrows, because a whole bird includes bone and you need more of it: we allowed 4 lb of boneless ham or sirloin for 8 people (half a pound each) but 9 lb of whole chicken (two birds). Even so, chicken edges out ham, and both leave sirloin far behind. If beef is your family's tradition, our deep dive on beef prices in 2026 explains why it has stayed stubbornly high (beef and veal were up 3.5% in the year to September).

Scale it: 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 guests

We scaled the same menu in a straight line. Real life is a little kinder than that (one bag of flour covers 4 or 12 people), so treat these as a ceiling for the tracked items.

4 $36.22 $34.61 $53.53
6 $54.34 $51.92 $80.30
8 $72.45 $69.22 $107.07

Here is a useful reality check. The USDA's Thrifty Food Plan for June 2026 puts a nutritious week of food for a family of four at $236.10, or about $33.73 a day. Our ham dinner for 4 comes to $36.22. In other words, a home-cooked Christmas dinner from scratch costs roughly what one ordinary day of thrifty eating costs. The holiday dinner itself is rarely what wrecks the December budget. The add-ons are: the second dessert, the drinks, the "we might need it" cheese board, the leftovers nobody eats. The swaps that move the total (and the ones that don't)

Swap (8 guests) You save Verdict
Sirloin roast → boneless ham $34.62 Worth it The single biggest lever on the list.
Ham → two whole chickens $3.22 Small Only if you prefer chicken anyway.
Drop the mac and cheese (1 lb cheddar) $6.13 Depends Cut the side nobody fights over, not the favorite.
Skip bacon in the greens $6.76 Worth it Butter and a little orange zest do the job.
Make the rolls instead of buying them varies Depends Flour is $0.55/lb, but only if you have the time and oven space.
Ask each guest to bring one side $10–$17 Worth it Assign dishes, don't say "bring anything".

Our view: protect the main and the one dish your family would notice missing, and be ruthless with everything else. The hosting side of this (plates, timings, who brings what) is covered in our hosting Christmas on a budget checklist.

"A home-cooked Christmas dinner for four costs about one day of the USDA thrifty food budget. The overspend is almost never the ham. It is everything piled around it."

Your buying calendar: when to buy what

Now – Nov 10
Print the list. Price five lines at your usual store and fill in the "your price" column. You now know your real total.
Nov 10
BLS publishes October average prices with the October CPI. If ham or beef jumps, decide your main then, not on December 23.
Late Nov
Buy shelf-stable items (flour, sugar, coffee) on your normal shop, one or two per week, so they never hit one December receipt. Leftover Thanksgiving staples count too; see our 5-week Thanksgiving grocery plan.
Early Dec
Buy the main if you have freezer space and see a good price. Assign the guest sides now.
Dec 21–23
Fresh items only: potatoes, tomatoes, milk, oranges. Take the printed list and do not shop hungry.

If you are building the whole December budget, not just the meal, The Holiday Spending Planner is our 15-page printable that helps you set your holiday number before December and track it while it is happening, and it pairs well with this list. And if December money talk tightens your chest before you have even opened the fridge, the free 7-Day Money Anxiety Reset journal is a ten-minute-a-day way to get your footing back. For the bigger seasonal picture, our 7-week Christmas budget set-aside shows how to fund all of it without a January credit card bill.

If the list is out of reach this year

If even $35 for a dinner for four is not realistic right now, you are not alone, and there is help that does not require you to explain yourself. The federal USA.gov food assistance page explains how to apply for SNAP and other programs, and how to get immediate food help from government and private organizations. Many community food pantries and places of worship also run holiday food distributions, so it is worth asking locally in early December, before the rush.

And a word on scaling down without feeling like you have failed: a smaller dinner is still Christmas dinner. Two of the menus above for 4 people cost less than $37 in tracked groceries. Pick the main your family loves most, one potato dish, one green, one dessert. A table that is calm and paid for beats a groaning table that follows you into February.

Quick answers

How much does Christmas dinner cost per person in 2026? About $8.65 to $13.38 a person for a full home-cooked dinner for 8, based on September 2026 BLS average prices, before extras like drinks and specialty items.

How much should I budget for Christmas dinner for 10? Around $87 to $91 for the tracked items with chicken or ham, or about $134 with sirloin. Then leave a buffer for the extras BLS does not track (drinks, cranberries, green beans) and price those at your own store.

Is ham cheaper than beef for Christmas? Yes, by a wide margin: boneless ham averaged $5.45 a pound in September 2026 against $14.11 for boneless sirloin.

Why isn't turkey on the list? BLS stopped publishing a national average price for whole frozen turkey, so there is no current official number to quote. Price it at your store and drop it into the "main" line.
