Cold Weather Payment 2026: £25 Dates, Triggers and Pay Days

Cold Weather Payment 2026: woman holding a glowing golden thermometer on a frosted moor at dawn

The Cold Weather Payment scheme reopens on Sunday 1 November 2026 and runs until 31 March 2027. If you get certain benefits and live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you'll receive £25 automatically for every 7-day spell when your area's average temperature is recorded or forecast at 0°C or below. Payments usually arrive within 14 working days – so a cold snap in mid-December may not pay out until January. Here is the full winter timeline, with real pay-day dates.

Who gets the Cold Weather Payment in 2026–27?

You don't apply – DWP pays it automatically if you qualify. According to GOV.UK, you'll usually be eligible if you get:

You receive… You'll usually qualify if…
Pension Credit You get it – that's usually enough
Income-related ESA You're in the work-related activity group or support group (or have certain premiums, a disabled child or a child under 5)
Universal Credit You and your partner aren't employed or 'gainfully self-employed', AND one of you has a health condition or disability that limits work, OR you have a child under 5 living with you. A disabled child amount in your claim also qualifies, even if you work
Support for Mortgage Interest You're treated as getting a qualifying benefit (for example, with a pensioner or disability premium, a disabled child or a child under 5)

Living in Scotland? Cold Weather Payments don't apply. Instead, Social Security Scotland pays a guaranteed annual Winter Heating Payment of £62 for 2026–27 to eligible low-income households, whatever the weather, with payments starting in December. Pension-age households may get the separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment (£105.55 to £316.70), paid from November.

The winter timeline: when the money actually lands

The key detail most guides skip: the £25 is paid after the cold spell, usually within 14 working days. We counted the working days (skipping weekends and the Christmas bank holidays) for five example spells:

If a 7-day cold spell ends on… Latest usual pay date (14 working days) Why it matters
Mon 30 November 2026 Fri 18 December 2026 Arrives before Christmas
Mon 14 December 2026 Wed 6 January 2027 Lands after Christmas – don't count on it for December
Sun 10 January 2027 Thu 28 January 2027 Helps with January bills
Sun 7 February 2027 Thu 25 February 2027 Late-winter top-up
Wed 31 March 2027 (last day) Tue 20 April 2027 Can arrive after the scheme ends

Our calculation: 14 working days after the spell ends, excluding weekends and bank holidays on 25 and 28 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. DWP may pay sooner.

The tool for this moment

Cold Weather Payments arrive late and unpredictably – which is exactly why winter bills catch so many households out. A simple bills calendar and a small buffer do the job the £25 can't.

The Matriarch's Money Reset – Step III: Own the System

  • Build a winter bills calendar so you know what leaves your account and when – energy, council tax, Christmas
  • Set up a small heating buffer that smooths out cold months, instead of relying on payments that may come weeks later
  • Write money boundaries for the season (gifts, hosting, lending) so heating stays protected

What £25 really covers – the honest maths

Ofgem's price cap for October to December 2026 puts a typical dual-fuel household paying by direct debit at £1,723 a year, up £60 from the previous quarter. Spread evenly, that's about £4.72 a day, so one £25 payment covers roughly five days of an average household's energy. In a real cold week you use more than average, so it covers less.

Here's the uncomfortable part: a mild winter can mean £0, and even a harsh one rarely replaces what a cold month adds to your bill. The payment is a welcome top-up – it isn't a plan.

One £25 payment covers about five days of a typical household's energy – and you may not see it until weeks after the cold has passed.

Your 6-step winter checklist

1. Check you're on the right benefit. If you're pension age on a low income and don't claim Pension Credit, check eligibility – it's the gateway to Cold Weather Payments and more. Citizens Advice and the Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK can help.

2. Tell DWP about changes. A child under 5 moving in, or going into hospital, can affect your payment. Universal Credit claimants can update their journal.

3. Know where it lands. Payments go into the same bank or building society account as your benefits, and they don't affect your other benefits.

4. Watch for scams. You never need to apply or give bank details for a Cold Weather Payment. Delete texts or emails asking you to.

5. Missing a payment? If the checker shows a trigger for your postcode and nothing arrives within 14 working days, contact the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus, or add a note to your Universal Credit journal.

6. Get free help early. If energy bills are already a struggle, talk to your supplier about a payment plan and contact Citizens Advice or MoneyHelper – both are free and impartial.

Frequently asked questions

When do Cold Weather Payments start in 2026?

£25 for each qualifying 7-day period of very cold weather. You get one payment for each qualifying period, so a long cold winter can mean several.

No. If you're eligible, DWP pays it automatically, usually within 14 working days of the cold spell, into the account your benefits are paid into.
