Social Security payments in November 2026 arrive on November 3 (for people who started benefits before May 1997), around November 10–11 (birthdays 1–10), November 18 (birthdays 11–20) and November 25 (birthdays 21–31). November's SSI was paid early, on October 30. The 3.6% COLA does not show up until payments issued in January 2027, so your November and December checks are the same size as now, and December's has to last 35 days. Here is the full calendar to the new year, and how to plan the holidays around it.

What your check will be, now and in January
The Social Security Administration announced on October 14 that benefits will rise 3.6% in 2027, up from 2.8% this year, for about 76 million people on Social Security or SSI. Based on SSA's estimates as reported by Kiplinger and Newsweek:
| Average monthly benefit | Now (through Dec 2026) | From Jan 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retired worker | $2,095 | $2,170 | +$75 |
| Retired couple (both receiving) | $3,238 | $3,355 | +$117 |
| Disabled worker | $1,642 | $1,701 | +$59 |
| SSI, individual (maximum) | $994 | $1,029 | +$35 |
Remember that the COLA is a gross figure. If you are on Medicare Part B, the 2027 premium is deducted from your check, so the raise you actually see may be smaller. We worked through that in how much of your raise you keep after Medicare Part B. Your personal COLA notice will appear in your my Social Security account from late November. The 2026 midterm results do not change any of these amounts; we checked the most common worries in 8 money myths about the midterm results.
The surprising number: December's check has to last 35 days
Here is what most payment-date articles miss. Because of how Wednesdays fall, every Wednesday group gets its December payment five weeks before its January payment: December 9 to January 13, December 16 to January 20, December 23 to January 27. November's payments, by contrast, are four weeks apart.
On the average retired worker's $2,095, that is about $75 a day in November but only about $60 a day in December, and December is the month with gifts, holiday food and heating bills. Put another way: if you spend December at November's pace, you would need about $524 more than the check provides before the January payment arrives. For the birthday 21–31 group, the December check lands on December 23, two days before Christmas, and then has to stretch to January 27.
Spend December at November's pace and you would need about $524 more than the average check before January's payment arrives.
The 35-day December gap is not a Social Security problem; it is a planning problem. Mapping each payment date against gifts, food and bills before December starts is what keeps January from beginning in the red.
The Holiday Spending Planner helps you:
- Set a total holiday budget and split it across gifts, food, travel and giving, before the first payment lands
- Plan purchases around your own payment dates, so the big shop is not left until December 23
- Track spending week by week so you can see the January gap coming, not after it arrives

- Write your three dates down. Your November date, your December date and your first January date. For most people that is three Wednesdays, five weeks apart at the end.
- Treat the December payment as five weeks of money. Divide it by five, not four, and use that as your weekly limit.
- Move holiday spending into November. If you can, buy gifts and non-perishable food from the November payment, which only has to last four weeks.
- Set aside the January bills first. Rent, utilities and insurance due in early January will be paid from the December check.
- Check your COLA notice in late November. Look at the net figure after Medicare and any tax withholding, not just the 3.6%.
- Know your Medicare deadline. Open enrollment runs until December 7; our guide to the 5 Medicare changes to check covers what to compare.
If you receive SSI, our explainer on why November has no SSI check covers the early payment, and if you are still working toward retirement, see the myths about full retirement age 67. If a payment is missing, wait three mailing days, then contact SSA directly at ssa.gov or 1-800-772-1213; be wary of anyone who calls, texts or emails asking for your Social Security number or bank details.
Quick answers
When will I get my Social Security payment in November 2026?
It depends on your birthday: the 1st–10th around November 10–11, the 11th–20th on November 18, and the 21st–31st on November 25. If you started benefits before May 1997, or get both Social Security and SSI, you are paid on November 3. November's SSI was paid on October 30.
Will my November Social Security check include the 2027 COLA?
No. The 3.6% increase starts with payments issued in January 2027. SSI recipients get their first increased payment on December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a holiday.
Why does SSI pay twice in some months?
When the 1st of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, SSI is paid on the last business day before. November's SSI arrived on October 30 and January's arrives on December 31, so October and December each contain two payments, while November and January have none.
