Country showdown · 6 countries · 1 Christmas shift
Working on Christmas Day 2026 (Friday 25 December) pays very differently depending on where you live. By law, New Zealand, Australia (for casuals under the Retail Award) and Ontario all end up worth about 2.5 times a normal day. Ireland guarantees about 2 times. The UK and the US guarantee no extra pay at all: anything more comes from your contract or employer.
If you work in a hospital, a care home, a shop, a hotel or a restaurant, there is a decent chance your Christmas plans include a roster. And every December the same question floods forums: do I get double time for working Christmas Day? The honest answer is "it depends on your country", which is why most answers online are either too vague or quietly wrong for half their readers.
So we lined up the legal minimums in six places side by side, using each government's own guidance. Then we ran one identical shift, eight hours on 25 December at each country's adult minimum wage, through every set of rules. Nobody else seems to have put these on one page. Here is the result.
The Christmas Day multiplier: what the law guarantees in each country
| Country | Legal minimum if you work 25 Dec | Extra day off? | Value vs a normal day |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | At least time-and-a-half for hours worked | Yes: a paid alternative holiday if 25 Dec is normally a working day for you | ≈2.5× |
| Australia | Set by your award or agreement. Retail Award casuals: 250% of the minimum hourly rate | No (penalty rate instead) | ≈2.5× (Retail casual) |
| Canada (Ontario) | Either public holiday pay plus 1.5× premium pay, or regular wages plus a substitute day off | Optional: you choose one of the two | ≈2.5× |
| Ireland | Your agreed rate for the hours, plus a public holiday benefit | Employer chooses: a day off within a month, an extra annual leave day, or an extra day's pay | ≈2× |
| United Kingdom | No legal premium; bank holidays "do not have to be given as paid leave" | No statutory right | 1× |
| United States | Federal law does not require holiday pay or a premium | No federal right | 1× |

Multipliers are our simplification of the legal minimum for an employee whose normal day is the same length as the shift. Contracts, awards and collective agreements can give more.
One 8-hour shift, six countries: what Christmas Day pays at minimum wage
To make this concrete, we ran the same eight-hour Christmas Day shift at each country's adult minimum wage for December 2026. These are gross amounts before tax, in local currency, and the "day off" value is what a paid day off would be worth on the same eight hours.
Legal minimum value of an 8-hour Christmas Day shift, as a multiple of a normal day
New Zealand · NZ$287.40 pay + NZ$191.60 alternative holiday = NZ$479.00
Australia (Retail Award casual, illustrated on A$26.44) · A$528.80
Ontario · C$143.60 public holiday pay + C$215.40 premium = C$359.00
Ireland · €113.20 pay + €113.20 benefit = €226.40
United Kingdom · £101.68 (no legal premium)
United States (federal minimum) · $58.00 (no legal premium)
Bar width = multiple of a normal day's pay (2.5× = full bar). Minimum wages used: NZ$23.95, A$26.44 (national minimum wage, used as a stand-in because award base rates vary), C$17.95 (Ontario from 1 Oct 2026), €14.15 (Ireland 2026 rate), £12.71 (UK 21+), US$7.25 (federal). Our calculations, 3 November 2026.
The gap is stark. A UK worker on the National Living Wage can work Christmas Day for exactly what she would earn on a wet Tuesday in March, unless her contract says otherwise. Her counterpart in Auckland walks away with time-and-a-half and a paid day off in the new year. Neither is "wrong" in its own legal system. But if you are deciding whether to volunteer for the Christmas shift, the difference is worth knowing before you say yes.
New Zealand: time-and-a-half plus a day in lieu
New Zealand has the most generous and the most clearly written rules of the six. According to Employment New Zealand, if you work a public holiday you must be paid the higher of time-and-a-half of your relevant daily pay for the hours worked, or your relevant daily pay including any penal rates in your agreement.
On top of that, if Christmas Day would otherwise be a working day for you, you earn an alternative holiday: one full paid day off, whatever hours you worked. It does not expire. If you have not taken it within 12 months you can ask to cash it out, and any untaken alternative holidays must be paid out when you leave.
The 2026 twist: Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December. If you do not normally work Saturdays, it is "Mondayised" to Monday 28 December, according to Employment New Zealand's public holiday dates. The same happens in January: the day after New Year's Day (Saturday 2 January 2027) moves to Monday 4 January for weekday workers. Check your payslip covers the right day. For every other NZ money date before the new year, see our NZ money calendar.
Australia: the award decides, and you can say no
Australia's national rules give you a right to be away from work on a public holiday. The Fair Work Ombudsman says employers can ask you to work, but the request must be reasonable, and you can refuse if you have reasonable grounds. Personal circumstances, including caring duties, are one of the factors. If you are not a casual and you would normally work that day, you are paid your base rate for the ordinary hours you would have worked, even when you stay home.
The rate for working comes from your award or enterprise agreement. Under the General Retail Industry Award, casuals get 250% of their minimum hourly rate for work on a public holiday, inclusive of the casual loading. Other awards differ, so look up yours with the Fair Work Pay Calculator rather than relying on what a co-worker was paid last year.
The 2026 twist: with Boxing Day on a Saturday, Fair Work's 2026 list shows an additional public holiday on Monday 28 December in every state and territory except Tasmania, where Boxing Day itself is observed on the Monday. South Australia calls its 26 December holiday Proclamation Day. Christmas Eve evening is also a part-day public holiday in South Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, and New Year's Eve evening in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Ontario, Canada: you choose the deal
Canadian holiday pay is provincial, so we used Ontario, the largest province, as the example. Its Employment Standards Act guide gives employees who agree to work a public holiday two options: regular wages for the shift plus a substitute day off with public holiday pay, or public holiday pay plus premium pay of 1.5 times your regular rate for every hour worked.
Public holiday pay is calculated as your regular wages plus vacation pay over the four work weeks before the holiday, divided by 20. For someone working a steady eight-hour, five-day week, that is roughly one normal day's pay. Ontario's general minimum wage rose to $17.95 an hour on 1 October 2026.
Two catches. First, the "last and first rule": you can lose holiday pay if you skip your last scheduled shift before or first after the holiday without reasonable cause. Second, Boxing Day is on a Saturday this year. If Saturday is not a working day for you, you get a substitute day off with public holiday pay (or the pay alone, if you agree in writing). Other provinces and federally regulated workplaces have their own rules, so check yours.
Ireland: the employer picks your benefit
Ireland's rules are flexible, which means you need to ask. According to the Workplace Relations Commission, if you work a public holiday you are paid the agreed rate for your hours and you keep your public holiday entitlement. Your employer then chooses one of: a paid day off within a month, an extra day of annual leave, or an extra day's pay.
Full-time workers qualify immediately. Part-time workers qualify once they have worked at least 40 hours in the five weeks before the holiday. If you are not normally rostered on that day, you are entitled to one-fifth of your normal weekly wage.
The 2026 twist: St Stephen's Day falls on Saturday 26 December, and there is no substitute Monday in Ireland. If Saturday is not a working day for your business, you still get an entitlement, but the WRC says there is "no legal right to take the next working day off". Your employer can give one of the other options instead. Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day are two of Ireland's ten public holidays. Paid a Christmas Bonus this year? United Kingdom: no legal premium, and bank holidays can come out of your leave
This surprises many people in the UK. GOV.UK is blunt: "Bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave," and an employer "can choose to include bank holidays as part of statutory annual leave." Almost all workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (28 days for a five-day week), but nothing in law says Christmas Day must be paid at a higher rate.
That means your contract is everything. Some employers do pay enhanced rates or give time off in lieu, but that is a contractual promise, not a legal one. Read the holiday clause before you sign up for the shift, and get any enhanced rate confirmed in writing. In England and Wales, Boxing Day's bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December 2026. For the rest of the UK calendar, from benefit dates to the January tax deadline, see our UK money calendar to January 2027.
United States: holiday pay is a perk, not a right
Federal law offers the least. The US Department of Labor states: "The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays." Holiday premiums, when they exist, come from employer policy or a union contract. Overtime still applies if your Christmas week takes you over 40 hours, and some states and cities have their own rules, so check your state labor department. What each country could learn from the others
| Country | What works | What is missing |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | Pay and a day off, written in plain language | Mondayisation is confusing for shift workers |
| Australia | A clear right to refuse unreasonable requests | Rates vary by award, hard to check quickly |
| Ontario | The worker chooses between cash and time | The "last and first" rule can catch people out |
| Ireland | Part-timers included after only 40 hours | The employer, not the worker, picks the benefit |
| United Kingdom | A generous 5.6-week leave floor | No holiday premium at all |
| United States | Overtime rules still protect long weeks | No federal right to paid holidays |

Quick answers
Do you get double time for working Christmas Day?
Not automatically. New Zealand guarantees time-and-a-half plus a paid day off; Ontario guarantees holiday pay plus 1.5× premium (or a substitute day); Australian rates depend on your award; Ireland adds an extra benefit; the UK and US guarantee no premium.
Is 28 December 2026 a public holiday?
Yes in England and Wales (Boxing Day substitute), in most Australian states (additional day), and in New Zealand for people who do not normally work Saturdays. Ireland has no substitute day.
Can my employer make me work Christmas Day?
In Australia, only if the request is reasonable and your refusal is unreasonable. Elsewhere it depends on your contract and local law; ask your official workplace regulator.
