Between now and mid-January, New Zealand households face 15 dates that can move their money: two Reserve Bank OCR decisions (28 October and 9 December), five NZ Super paydays, a general election, Black Friday, four Christmas and New Year public holidays, the end of the school term and the 15 January tax deadline. Below they are in order, each with one thing to do before it arrives.
This is a working calendar, not a news story. Print it, stick it on the fridge, and cross dates off as you go. Prices are still climbing faster than wages for many families. Stats NZ puts annual inflation at 3.7% in the year to the September 2026 quarter, still above the Reserve Bank's 1–3% target. That means the next eleven weeks reward people who plan by the date rather than by the month.
+19.1%
Petrol, year to Sept 2026
+9.3%
Electricity, same period
+6.2%
Local council rates
Category figures as reported by interest.co.nz and Newswire from the Stats NZ CPI release, 22 October 2026.
What those price rises cost a typical week
Percentages don't pay bills, so we turned them into dollars. The starting amounts below are illustrative; swap in your own.
| Bill | A year ago | At the Sept 2026 rise | Extra per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol (+19.1%) | $80 a week | $95.28 a week | $794.56 |
| Electricity (+9.3%) | $250 a month | $273.25 a month | $279.00 |
| Council rates (+6.2%) | $3,500 a year | $3,717 a year | $217.00 |
| Total | $1,290.56 (about $24.82 a week) |
Petrol actually fell 6.5% in the September quarter after jumping 20.1% in the June quarter, so the pump price you see today may sit below that annual peak. Electricity and rates do not come back down like that. For the power side of the bill, our explainer on the end of the low-user power plan shows who is hit hardest, and the 4-week cost-of-living plan for petrol, power and rates turns these numbers into weekly actions.
The calendar: 15 dates, in order
WED
28
OCT
1. OCR decision (Monetary Policy Review), 2pm
The OCR is 2.75% after September's rise from 2.50%. Newswire reports that ANZ, Westpac, BNZ and ASB all expect a further 0.25-point rise to 3%. Do this: if your fixed mortgage term ends before March, note today's advertised rates so you can compare after the announcement. Our OCR decision explainer has the background.
TUE
3
NOV
2. NZ Super payday
One of five fortnightly payment dates between now and the end of the year listed by Work and Income. Do this: set up the December plan (see date 9) now, while there's still time.
SAT
7
NOV
3. General election day
The election date of 7 November was announced in January, with official results due on 27 November. Do this: nothing with your money. Campaign promises about tax, KiwiSaver or benefits only change your budget once they are passed into law and take effect, so don't spend or borrow against them.
TUE
17
NOV
4. NZ Super payday
Do this: write your Christmas gift list with a dollar amount next to every name before Black Friday ads take over your feed. Our guide to how much to spend on Christmas gives you a way to set that number.
FRI
27
NOV
5. Black Friday
Consumer NZ reminds shoppers that sales must be genuine, that Consumer Guarantees Act rights still apply to sale items (even if the label says "no refunds on sale items"), and suggests paying by card so you can ask your bank for a chargeback if a retailer fails. Do this: check the usual price on a price-comparison site before believing any "half price" label.
MON
30
NOV
6. Self-employed: the 28 November tax date lands on a weekend
Monthly GST filers and people using the accounting income method for provisional tax have a 28 November date (IRD). It's a Saturday this year, so the payment is due the next working day. Do this: move the money into a separate tax account now, not on the Friday.
TUE
1
DEC
7. NZ Super payday
Do this: pay for Christmas food staples that keep (tins, baking supplies, frozen items) from this payment rather than the one on the 15th.
WED
9
DEC
8. OCR decision with full Monetary Policy Statement
The last OCR call of 2026, per the Reserve Bank's schedule. ASB, quoted by Newswire, expects annual inflation to reach 4.7% in the December quarter. Do this: if you're refixing in the new year, book a conversation with your bank or a mortgage adviser for the week after this decision.
TUE
15
DEC
9. The last NZ Super payday before Christmas
The next one is Tuesday 29 December, so this payment has to cover 14 days that include Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Do this: split it in two the day it lands: one half for Christmas week, one half (untouched) for 22–28 December.
FRI
18
DEC
10. Term 4 ends (at the latest)
Term 4 runs from 12 October and ends no later than 18 December; Term 1 2027 starts between 28 January and 3 February (school term dates). That's six to seven weeks of holiday food, care and outings. Do this: price the holiday programme or care weeks now; popular ones fill early.
FRI
25
DEC
11. Christmas Day, then Boxing Day observed on Monday 28 December
Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so for many workers it is observed on Monday 28 December (Employment New Zealand). Do this: if you work shifts, check your payslip for public-holiday rates and any alternative holiday.
TUE
29
DEC
12. NZ Super payday between the holidays
Do this: this is the payment that has to last until mid-January. Pay January's fixed bills (rent, power, phone) first, before the Boxing Day sales continue.
FRI
1
JAN
13. New Year's Day, then Day after New Year's observed on Monday 4 January
2 January 2027 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Monday 4 January for many workers. Do this: bank transfers and direct debits can shift around long weekends; check due dates on anything that falls between 1 and 4 January.
FRI
15
JAN
14. Provisional tax instalment
For a standard 31 March balance date, 15 January is a provisional tax instalment date under the standard, ratio and accounting income methods (IRD). Do this: if you freelance or run a side business, set the amount aside in December, before Christmas spending starts.
WED
10
FEB
15. First OCR review of 2027
The next scheduled decision after December. Do this: by now you want a January spending total next to your plan, so you can see what actually happened instead of guessing.
If the OCR does rise: what 0.25 points means on a mortgage
Nobody knows what each bank will do with its advertised rates, so this is a sensitivity check, not a forecast. We used an illustrative 5.00% rising to 5.25% on a 25-year table loan:
$400,000 loan: $2,338.36 → $2,396.99 a month (+$58.63)
$500,000 loan: $2,922.95 → $2,996.24 a month (+$73.29, or $879.46 a year)
Most New Zealand borrowers are on fixed terms, so the change only reaches you when your term ends. The question that matters is when your current rate expires, not what happens on 28 October. If you're also weighing KiwiSaver changes, our piece on KiwiSaver at 3.5% or 3% covers that side.
The pinch point everyone forgets: 15 to 29 December
For anyone paid fortnightly, including the many older women on NZ Super, the biggest risk is the 14-day gap that straddles Christmas, not Black Friday. The money that lands on 15 December has to buy the Christmas food, the last gifts, the petrol for visiting family, and then still cover everyday costs until the 29th. If you get to Christmas Eve with most of it gone, the week after Christmas has to run on a credit card or nothing at all.
Our fix is the "two-envelope fortnight". On 15 December, transfer half the payment into a separate account or envelope labelled 22–28 Dec. Spend only from the first half until the 21st. If you want a ready-made structure for this, The Holiday Spending Planner is a printable that maps gifts, food, travel and the January catch-up on one page, so you can see the whole season before you spend a dollar of it. Quick answers
When is the next OCR announcement in New Zealand?
Wednesday 28 October 2026 (Monetary Policy Review), then Wednesday 9 December 2026 (full Monetary Policy Statement), then Wednesday 10 February 2027.
When is NZ Super paid around Christmas 2026?
Work and Income lists Tuesday 15 December and Tuesday 29 December, so there is a 14-day gap that includes Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Check the printable calendar on the Work and Income site for any holiday adjustments to other payments.
Is Boxing Day 2026 observed on a Monday?
Yes. Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December, so if you don't normally work Saturdays it's observed on Monday 28 December. The Day after New Year's Day (Saturday 2 January 2027) is observed on Monday 4 January on the same basis.
Does the election change my tax or benefits straight away?
No. Changes only happen once new rules are passed and take effect, usually from a set future date. Budget with the rules that apply today.
Three things this calendar can't fix, and who can help
If the numbers simply don't add up, no calendar trick will close that gap. MoneyTalks is a free financial helpline that can connect you with a budgeting service near you (MoneyTalks). Work and Income can also tell you whether you qualify for extra help with costs.
If you're dreading opening the bank app, that's a signal worth listening to, not a personal failing. The free 7-Day Money Anxiety Reset journal takes about ten minutes a day and is a gentle way back in.
If the anxiety is about the news, from interest rates to the election to prices, limit how often you check it. Decide your plan on the dates above, not every time a headline appears.
