Gold at $4,100 an Ounce: 6 Myths to Clear Up Before You Buy

Gold at $4,100: woman on a rock in a lake of liquid gold holding a coin to the moon

Gold futures opened at $4,159 an ounce on Thursday, 22 October 2026, then slipped to about $4,104 in early trading, Yahoo Finance reported. That's about 5% lower than a month ago, but still a price that would have sounded impossible a few years back. With oil above $110 a barrel, war headlines from the Strait of Hormuz and inflation back in the news, "should I buy gold?" is one of the most-searched money questions of the season. Before you answer it, clear up these six myths.

6 myths, and the reality

MYTH 1: Gold only goes up.

Reality: it just fell about 5% in a month. Gold can drop sharply and stay down for years. A high price tells you what happened, not what will happen.

MYTH 2: Gold protects you from inflation every time.

Reality: on 22 October, gold moved lower partly because of inflation concerns. The link is real over long periods and unreliable over short ones.

MYTH 3: Jewelry is a good way to own gold.

Reality: you pay for design, labour and the retailer's margin. Jewelry prices are rising mostly because of the gold price itself, and resale value is usually far below what you paid.

MYTH 4: Coins and bars cost the same as the gold price.

Reality: dealers add a premium when you buy and pay you less when you sell. Add storage and insurance, and the price has to rise just for you to break even.

MYTH 5: Silver is the cheap version, so it's safer.

Reality: silver has beaten gold over the past year, Fortune reports, but it has historically been even more volatile. Cheaper per ounce doesn't mean lower risk.

MYTH 6: Everyone's buying, so I'm late.

Reality: that feeling is FOMO, and it's the same pull behind viral products. We explain it in the Stanley Cup effect.

The real question isn't "gold or not?"

When the news is frightening, buying something solid feels like taking control. That feeling is valid; the decision still deserves a calm brain. Our guide to staying calm when oil prices jump covers the same reflex.

The Matriarch's Money Brain Workbook uses ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) exercises to help you notice when fear is making the decision and to choose based on your values instead. It's the step to take before any big money move.

Before you buy any gold: a 4-question check

  1. Do I have an emergency fund? Gold isn't one; selling takes time and costs money. See how much emergency fund you need.
  2. Am I paying off high-interest debt? Clearing a 22% credit card is a guaranteed return gold can't promise.
  3. Am I using my retirement accounts? Tax-advantaged saving usually comes first.
  4. If I still want gold, what small share of my savings is it, and could I live with it falling 20%?

Quick questions

What is the price of gold today? December gold futures opened at $4,159 an ounce on 22 October 2026 and traded near $4,104 early that morning. Prices move constantly; check a live source.

Is gold a good investment right now? Nobody can know short-term direction. Gold fell about 5% over the past month. It can play a small role in a diversified plan, but it doesn't replace an emergency fund or retirement saving.

Is silver better than gold? Silver outperformed gold over the past year, but it is historically more volatile.
