Fuel prices in Australia rose 14.8% in August 2026 alone, after a 7.5% rise in July, the ABS reports. The cause: higher world oil prices and the end of the remaining federal fuel excise relief. Fuel pushed annual inflation to 4.0%. You can't control the oil price, but in most capital cities when you fill up matters almost as much as where. This toolkit gathers the tools that work, in one place.
Tool 1: Ride the price cycle
In Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, petrol prices move in a repeating cycle: a sharp jump, then a slow fall over days or weeks, the ACCC explains. Filling up near the bottom of the cycle instead of the top can save 20 cents a litre or more in some cycles. On a 60-litre tank, that's $12 a fill.
- Check the ACCC's petrol price cycle updates for your city to see where in the cycle you are.
- Rule of thumb: if prices just jumped, buy only what you need and wait. If they've been falling for days, fill up.
- Regional areas usually don't have cycles; there, the cheapest station matters more than the day.

Tool 2: Your state's free price app
| State | Free official tool | Best feature |
|---|---|---|
| NSW & Tasmania | FuelCheck | Real-time prices at every station |
| Western Australia | FuelWatch | Shows tomorrow's prices, as stations must lock them in a day ahead |
| Queensland, SA, NT | Mandatory price reporting via approved apps | Compare prices on your route |
| Victoria | Service Victoria fuel prices | Station prices near you |
Names and coverage can change; search your state government's site for the current tool.
Tool 3: Stack the discounts
- Supermarket shopper dockets (often 4 cents a litre) and fuel-linked loyalty programs.
- Roadside assistance or membership discounts, which many people pay for and forget to use.
- Fuel discount gift cards bought at a discount, if you buy fuel at that brand anyway.
Tool 4: Use less of it
- Check tyre pressure monthly. Under-inflated tyres waste fuel.
- Take the roof racks off and the heavy gear out of the boot.
- Combine errands into one loop; cold engines use more fuel on short trips.
- Drive smoothly; hard acceleration and braking can raise fuel use noticeably.

Tool 5: A fuel budget that actually holds
Add up the last four weeks of fuel receipts and multiply by 13 for your yearly cost. Then set a weekly fuel amount and move it into a separate account or envelope. When fuel rises, you'll see it straight away, instead of noticing at the end of the month that everything else got squeezed. If power is your other big bill, our Midday Power Saver break-even tables for Victoria show whether three free hours a day will actually cut it. And if a rent increase notice has just arrived too, read our rent increase scripts for Australia before you accept it.
Cycle timing ($12 a fill), a docket (4c/L) and one fewer trip a week can add up to more than $500 a year for a weekly filler.
Example: one 60-litre fill a week, $12 saved on half of fills through cycle timing ($312 a year), plus 4c/L on all fills ($125), plus one fewer 20 km trip a week at about $0.20/km ($208). Your savings depend on your driving.

Quick questions
Why did petrol prices go up in Australia in 2026? The ABS says fuel rose 14.8% in August because of higher world oil prices and the end of the remaining federal fuel excise relief.
What is the cheapest day to buy petrol? In capital cities with price cycles, the cheapest time is near the bottom of the cycle, not a fixed day. Check the ACCC's updates or your state app.
