Black Friday 2026 Australia: Your $346 Plan, Date by Date

Black Friday 2026 Australia: woman holding her shopping list on a harbour jetty

Black Friday 2026 in Australia falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November, and shoppers expect to spend an average of $346 each, up from $324 last year, according to a Shopify survey of 2,000 Australian adults. That 6.8% jump is bigger than the 4.0% annual inflation rate the ABS reported for August, and it comes after the Reserve Bank's fourth rate rise of the year took the cash rate to 4.60%. For a couple who both spend the average, that is $692 in one long weekend, before Christmas has even started.

There are 32 days between today and Black Friday. That is enough time to turn the sales into a plan instead of a surprise. Here is the calendar, the numbers and the checklist.

Why Black Friday 2026 feels different

Australians are spending more on Black Friday even though money feels tighter. In the same Shopify survey, reported by Yahoo Finance on 6 October, 54% of respondents said economic conditions had negatively affected their holiday shopping plans, and 85% said they would rather wait for the right product than settle for the easiest option. The survey was taken in July, before the Reserve Bank's September rate rise.

The squeeze is real. The ABS says prices rose 4.0% in the 12 months to August 2026, with electricity up 13.2% as Commonwealth rebates ended and automotive fuel up 13.5%. The RBA raised the cash rate on 29 September to 4.60%, its fourth increase in 2026. Comparison site Savings.com.au estimates that, across the four 2026 hikes, repayments on an average new home loan of $731,000 have risen by about $455 a month, or roughly $5,460 a year.

Black Friday itself keeps growing. Last year the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan forecast a record $6.8 billion in spending over the four-day Black Friday to Cyber Monday period. When a sales event is that big, the pressure to join in is big too.

A discount only saves you money if you were going to buy the thing anyway. Everything else is spending with a countdown timer.

The Black Friday 2026 calendar: date by date

Date (2026) What happens Your money move
Wed 28 Oct ABS releases September CPI Note what prices are doing before you set your number.
Tue 3 Nov RBA Melbourne Cup Day rate decision If you have a variable mortgage, check your new repayment first.
Wed 11 Nov Singles' Day sales Test your list: only buy what is already on it.
Fri 27 Nov Black Friday Buy from your list, within your number.
Sat 28 Nov Small Business Saturday Local gifts, if they are in the plan.
Mon 30 Nov Cyber Monday Final online buys, then close the tabs and the apps.
Sat 26 Dec Boxing Day sales Only for planned items you deliberately left until after Christmas.

What “the average” really costs: three illustrative budgets

The $346 figure is an average expectation, not a target. These illustrative examples show how quickly sale spending moves once you add a second shopper or a little “deal drift” (the extra items bought because they were on sale).

Planned: one person, $346
One person plus 30% deal drift: $450
Couple, both at the average: $692

Now compare that with the $455 a month that an average new mortgage has added in repayments this year, according to Savings.com.au's estimate. For many households, a couple's Black Friday weekend at the average costs about one and a half months of this year's extra mortgage repayments. If any of it goes on a credit card or buy now, pay later, the real cost arrives in January.

Set your number before the sales set it for you

Black Friday, Christmas and Boxing Day all land within five weeks. Planning them together is what stops January bill shock.

The Holiday Spending Planner helps you:

  • set one total holiday number and split it across sales, gifts, food and travel,
  • build a gift and needs list before 27 November, so you only shop from the list,
  • track every purchase as it happens, so you know where you stand on Cyber Monday.

Your Black Friday 2026 checklist

  1. This week: pick your total. Start from what is left after bills, not from the average. If the number is $150, that is a good number.
  2. Write the list. Needs first (school items, a worn-out appliance), then gifts. Add a price you would happily pay today, so you can tell a real discount from a fake one.
  3. Screenshot prices now. A “40% off” sign means little if the price went up in October. Our guide to Black Friday refund rights explains what you are entitled to if something goes wrong.
  4. Pay from money you have. If you use buy now, pay later, put every repayment date in your calendar the moment you buy.
  5. Unsubscribe and log out. Turn off shopping app notifications from 20 November to 1 December. Fewer prompts, fewer impulse buys.
  6. Keep a buffer for essentials. Fuel and power bills are still high. Our petrol prices toolkit shows where the savings are.

The next big number arrives on Wednesday: our explainer on Australia's 28 October CPI release shows what the inflation figure means for your weekly budget, and our Melbourne Cup rate decision calculator works out your repayment.
