Halloween Files #3 — Doom Spending
There is a strange financial thought that can appear when the future feels frightening:
“What is the point of being careful if everything is expensive anyway?”
It can show up after reading bad economic news, worrying about housing, watching prices rise or feeling as though the traditional milestones of adulthood keep moving further away.
Then £60 today can feel more emotionally real than a distant financial goal.
Why uncertainty can change the value of “now”
When the future feels predictable, delaying a reward can feel worthwhile. When the future feels unstable, immediate comfort can become more persuasive.
This does not mean every spontaneous purchase is doom spending. It means uncertainty can change the story we tell ourselves about what saving is for.

The purchase may be buying certainty
A frightening future is abstract. A dinner, trip, package or new outfit is concrete. You can touch it. Experience it. Control it.
That is why simply telling an anxious person to “think long term” can miss the emotional logic entirely.
Did I want this before I felt anxious about the future?
Am I buying pleasure — or proving to myself that I can still have something good?
What future am I assuming when I say “there’s no point saving”?
What tiny action could support future me without punishing present me?
You do not have to choose between today-you and future-you
A healthier financial relationship does not require making present life miserable for a hypothetical future. It means letting both versions of you have a voice.
That balance — rather than perfection — is one reason this site talks about financial behaviour through psychology instead of only budgets.
